Utrecht Approaches to Medieval Studies

Utrecht University has a tradition of interdisciplinary study of the Middle Ages. Historians, philologists, art historians and musicologists work together by putting the methods and results of their respective disciplines at each other’s disposal. Because of this orientation, Medieval Studies as practised at Utrecht have left a distinctive mark on scholarship internationally. During the second Summer School, in a series of lectures and seminars in English students will become acquainted with some Utrecht Approaches to Medieval Studies. Faculty include: Dieuwke van der Poel (Literature) Karl Kügle (Musicology) Ranke de Vries (Celtic Studies) Marco Mostert (Medieval Literacy) Anna Adamska (Comparative History)
20 Scholarships are available which cover tuition, board and lodging. Application forms may be obtained from dr. Anna Adamska (), the School’s coordinator. They should be returned no later than 10 May 2009. Results of the selection of candidates will be known on 25 May 2009. Utrecht University offers students various possibilities for studying medieval history, literature, art, music etc.,both at undergraduate (BA) and postgraduate (MA) level. The two-year interdisciplinary ‘Research Master’ in Medieval Studies has been on offer since September 2004. Students are selected on the basis of their scholarly merits. After having completed the ‘Research Master’ programme, they will normally aim to write a PhD thesis, either at Utrecht or elsewhere. Seminars and tutorials in the ‘Research Master’ programme are mainly taught in English. Exceptionally, Dutch, German, Italian and French may be also used. Several scholarships are available.
